The Dark Restaurant: Eyes not required
The Dark Restaurant (黑暗餐厅) has a very innovative concept. I was brought there by some friends in Shanghai, China. (However, many blind/dark restaurants are beginning to pop up all over the world! They recently opened one in Toronto too.) They say that if you have lost one of your five senses, your other senses become more sensitive. If you take away your sight, you would be able to concentrate on your other senses so much more! What would it be like to taste food with a blind eye? Indulge your senses to the next level! When you eat at Dark Restaurant, you eat in complete darkness. It is supposed to help you enhance your taste sensations as you slowly savor each flavor and texture. All the waiters and waitresses are blind as well. It helps you experience what it would feel like to actually be blind!
Here is what the menu looks like. You can click on these pictures to view a larger version. The eye on the cover of the menu is so beautiful!
This is considered fine dining and very expensive compared to the vast amount of cheaper street foods available in China. As of now, US$1 = 6.8 RMB, so these dishes range from US$25-35. And you order first before entering the dark dining hall of course!
It was a really interesting experience! I don't have any other pictures because cameras are not allowed inside. Plus it's all dark anyway. I wondered whether there was any kind of decor in the dining hall because it was seriously pitch black. The kind of darkness where you can't see your own hand if you put it in front of your face! My friends and I kept bumping into things with our hands... It was difficult to find food and bring it to your mouth. We ended up using our fingers... (Good thing nobody could see our bad table manners!) But the food was DELICIOUS and I was really able to concentrate on the taste and flavor! You may be able to get the same effect by blindfolding yourself or eating in a room with no windows. Although it may feel very silly, it is something to try! It's great to really savor and enjoy your food because eating slowly will help you realize when you are full and prevent you from overeating. Pay attention to your body's needs while you are eating. There is a difference between eating to satiety and eating until you are stuffed and can't move!
What do you think of this concept? Would you like to try eating at the Dark Restaurant?

Wow that sounds like a interesting experience, I never thought such a place would exist, thats really something.
Are you making fun of Asians with their small eyes? ;) I guess I should really try that when I get to Shanghai to see a great friend of mine.
I always like to try new things like this, so I'm sure I would love to visit if I ever got a chance to. Now I'm curious what the inside actually looks like when it's lit up.
@Roadlesstaken - meee too! it could have been so trashy/dumpy inside and nobody would be able to tell! they'd prolly kick me out if i lit up the place with a flashlight or something
That could be great actually!
I heard about this kind of restaurants in Paris, I'll need to try.
Anyway it's just a new experience, so why not? ! ^-
this is interesting! i should go visit when i go back..
lol eating in the dark ...disaster waiting to happen. I wouldn't wear anything white that's for sure.
wonder what they will come up next !
Thx! Do you bike in Guelph as well? I used to always bike at Guelph. You should try biking down Gordon road to downtown so relaxing! I used to volunteer at the Bike Centre (http://www.csaonline.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2:bike-center&catid=2:services&Itemid=49)
Its at the basement of the Biology house, so if your bike is kind of messed up somehow they will help you out for free. haha I miss Guelph.
that's pretty interesting! I'd try it for sure...
hmm from a business standpoint it also seems to be pretty profitable lol
darkness = no electricity, no need for decor or formally dressed attire...haha
that is pretty stinkin awesome. I would go there :D (well not for a blind date).
that is SO cool :O
where is it in shanghai? i can go check it out when i go back =)
omgosh, i want to go!!
@Dobserver - haha that's true. I remember hearing other customers at other tables talking.. but i have no idea exactly how big the place was and how much business they were getting. i hope they are getting lots of business! It's a really creative dining concept
yep, i still remember what the duck tasted like to this day ... and the raw beef salad. it was amazing eh lizzie. It's a good thing it was in the dark, i was in pain throughout all the pleasure-eating cuz of my stupid cankersore. If you saw me, my face would have been like this >X< but felt like this ^0^!!!!
Woah, that's so cool! I would love to go there. I wonder what would happen if someone started to have a panic attack, though?
Thanks for the add! <3 I've seen the restaurant on some TV shows, but I'm scared about what they'd try to feed me, haha.
Take care! <3
Pretty cool.
ooooh scary!! i like seeing what i put in my mouth haha!
I would try it... but not going for a date...
Table manner is very important and I would like to know how my date eats ^~^"
Super cool concept!

wow,it actually sounds like it'd be a great experience...
Not really. i would rather eat with some light, so I dont get messy..
Sounds like they should have egg dishes on menu.
