Misconceptions of Exercise
I think there are some big misconceptions out there about women and exercise. A lot of women believe that exercise and strength training will make them muscular like a man. I've even seen Asian dramas where women say they avoid walking up stairs because they think that will make their calves big. I am tired of these misconceptions.....
Women simply do not produce enough testosterone to produce muscles like men. Lean muscle mass not only increases metabolism, but it makes a woman's body look toned and amazing -- not big and muscular! I have seen many girls try to lose weight only by restricting their diet. Even if they are successful, I have never seen them maintain their weight in the long term because restrictive diets are not easy to sustain and they decrease your body's metabolism.
Stick-thin and androgynous models are displayed on ads, magazine covers, and billboards and have made a lot of women believe that this is the ideal body shape. However, Men have rated a 0.7 waist to hip ratio (WHR) as the most attractive on a woman. Even though most sexual encounters are more for pleasure rather than for reproduction, men instinctively prefer hourglass figures because a curvy figure is 30% more reproductive than other types of figures.
I believe that the 0.7 WHR is only attainable through regular exercise and fueling your body with healthy foods. With women that don't exercise, I see a lot of tiny butts and skinny legs, but big stomaches. I know that there are some people out there that are genetically lucky and don't need to break a sweat. (That doesn't mean they are necessarily healthy though). But the majority of us have to work hard if we want to look good. Regular exercise helps to prevent chronic diseases, but I know that for a lot of young people.... long-term health is not one of their biggest priorities. Yes I'm trying to encourage healthy physical activity through vanity!!
The most beautiful and sought after bodies in the entertainment industry come from women that exercise religiously. The following information is completely off the top of my head. Oh gosh, I read too many tabloid magazines.... Correct me if I'm wrong or feel free to add in. Yea, I know you're all guilty of reading celebrity gossip too!
---
Jennifer Aniston -- Yoga & Running
This woman has now hit her 40s and she looks even more amazing than she did in her "Friends" days. Snapped pictures of her jogging are all over tabloid magazines. I also read that yoga helped her through her divorce with Brad Pitt. Yoga helps to strengthen your muscles and calm your mind from all the stresses and noise you hear all day. It certainly helped Aniston through her hard time!Megan Fox -- Pilates

The claimed "hottest woman in the world"? Megan Fox is famed to have a 22 inch waist which she claims she got from pilates. Pilates workouts focus a lot on the core abdominal musclesJessica Biel -- Gym Rat
I've heard that Justin Timberlake said that his girlfriend, Jessica Biel, kicks ass at the gym! I've seen pictures of her doing lunges, squats, you name it. Her fitness routine helped her take over Jennifer Lopez's title of best butt!Lee Hyori -- Dancer
Lee Hyori is my fave. I chose this picture specifically because it shows the tones and muscles of her body. I think a lot of her photos are photoshopped to get rid of this toned-ness which is unfortunate. Dancers' bodies are amazing and it is a great type of cardio if you hate the treadmill. I've been hearing a lot about Zumba fitness classes that are increasing in popularity too!---
I know that some people just plain hate exercise. Exercise is hard work and may require a bit of discomfort, but the end result is great long-term health and confidence in yourself. This is a judgement call on what you believe is more worth it.
Exercise makes me feel great afterwards :)

I think Lee Hyori is gorgeous ! I would definitely want her body out of all the others. I hate exercising, and even when i try getting in the routine of it - i'll be consistent for a week, maybe a week and a half, and then just stop.
What gets you motivated to work out consistently?
Sometimes I can't go to bed if I haven't exercised that day. haha It's horrible. I'm tossing and turning in bed because my body doesn't feel right. I just need to do some work out at least.
This blog reminds me I should get back to my exercise routine. I've just been playing tennis a lot as my work out but I gotta do more. I work at a tennis & fitness club for god sake, so I shouldn't have any excuse =P
i agree with 110% of this - rec'd because i lovvve exercising and people don't give it enough thought :)
I have absolutely no motivation to exercise. I know I need to exercise but I'm so lame. I do agree that it's a great benefit to one's life and health.
The human body has 600 engines or muscle groups to contend with. For the money and looks, I'm running and lifting weights. All bases are covered and I'm kept in good shape.
exercises are good. i love playing tennis; running and swinging.
haha nice post, but hyori is almost all man-made including her "toned stomach"(might explain why her most photos seem photoshopped because they probably are or its her belly button surgery)
@themagicchun - Because of so much social pressure to fit an ideal... I seriously think vanity (wanting to look good) is the biggest motivator for most people to do exercise. Which part of exercise do you hate the most? I agree that the treadmill is boring and gruelling torture! Other people find social exercise better -- like tennis, badminton, vball, etc. Or finding a workout buddy to motivate you to go the gym.
In the past, I've had the best consistent workouts when my schedule was the same every day. I've had some pretty crappy schedules before.. Like a 1 hr class at 830am, then a 6 hour break before my next class. Crappy schedules like that make me not work out (or study well) because there is no routine!
Another thing you can try is mixing up your fitness routine. Perhaps you feel bored with one workout. I really like strength training, dance, & yoga classes... Most gyms offer all kinds of fitness classes to keep you interested :)
@CyborgSociety - Damn, I love Hyori. I almost don't want to believe that she has had plastic surgery or boob job.. but you're right... she is just too perfect!!! ><
I have so many (asian) friends who hate exercising!! It's so frustrating because I try so hard to be active, and I often get don't get a lot of people who want to do stuff with me that's more active. I know that as I get older I have to work even harder to maintain a toned physique--my body just wants to hang on to the fat. On top of that I get very muscular very easily because of my body type so I am in the minority of females that CAN get very muscular arms/legs--I've even come close to a six pack before. =P
man i wish i had jennifer aniston's figureeeeee
@i_Nutrition - Haha the thing is, I just have skinny genes, so i never feel the need to work out. My body is fine, but with some exercise i'd think i'd be alright. but laziness is my curse xD. and yes! i agree, i hate the treadmill. time goes by incredibly slow when you're running. well i admire you for having the willpower to do it all, haha.
and thanks, i've never done yoga before, so i definitely will try it sometime :]
i'm all for exercise, believe me, but the 0.7 hip to waist ratio thing is not that hard to achieve, actually. women's natural shape will often fall near that number no matter what her size is. 24/36=.66 30/40=.75 27/34=.79 22/30=.73 35/45=.77 etc. etc.
rare is the woman whose waist measurements are bigger than or equal to her hips, no matter her muscle mass... so all the .70 ratio appreciation proves is that men are attracted to women whose waist measurements are smaller than their hips, which is essentially most women! big surprise!
i remembered when i first died.
okay, now i feel super motivated to try out dancing @_@
@rarareplica - You're right, it's coz of the female body's estrogen that your weight naturally goes to your hips to creative curves. That's why it attracts men so much because estrogen is one of the fertility hormones. Men don't produce as much estrogen, so they have a different distribution of body mass.
I really enjoyed this post.. and yes I really hate it when I try to get my girlfriends to go running or something and they ALWAYS, without fail use the "I don't want to get bulky legs or too muscular" crap.
Honestly, it's just them being lazy. Girls can't bulk up like guys without any help like protein shakes, etc. I recently got annoyed with a friend who I asked if she wanted to take this dance class with me and she gave the "i heard my arms will get big" excuse. BAH.
But thanks to you, I found out I am very very close to having a nice 0.7 ratio. It must mean I have a nice shape. HAHHAAH. Totally kidding! Interesting entry!
P.S Love all the celeb's body but Megan Fox just doesn't cut it for me... Not a nice sporty toned shape that I would like. She's hot still.
I started running when I was a freshmen in highschool..at first it was to purely lose weight...I didnt think Id still be doing it four years later and adding on power yoga...
seriously I exercise every single day. If I dont I feel disgusting and ugly. I dont wanna leave the house if I havent done my daily 3 mile run.
what motivates me to get up off my ass and be in discomfort for up to 30 minutes...in my case for today, for power yoga, 60 minutes...Its the feeling I know I will get afterward and the results of a toned strong beautiful body.
So like the poster I exercise for vanity reasons. But the health benefits that im getting from consistantly exercising and eating right is a bonus. Its awesome. i know Im helping my body fight off a lot sickness and disease and I know I will thank myself later.....like when Im 40 and still lookin good :)
pretty interesting!
Hyori is cool! Ah, motivation to get my bum moving. :) Thanks for posting.
@kieri126 - You're going to be a hot cougar when you're 40 ;)
I just came back from a hot yoga class. It was a whole 90mins, i thought i was going to die lol. But i feel so refreshed and calm now!! =D
@lil_squirrel4ever - I can totally relate with not finding any friends who like to exercise too. But you found somebody to do the Grouse Grind with you right? It seems safer to be with someone else..... lol
and six packs are awesome!!!
@i_Nutrition - hahaha i know right. its killer. but you feeeeeel so GOOD afterwards....you sweat a ton...imagine all the toxins you got rid of in those 90 minutes!!!
i do aerobics and it helps... and also walking up stairs...
btw , i like the picture the naked woman... it`s really beautiful...
women`s body are beautiful and we should proud of it...
