The Invincibility of Youth is a Thin Veil
I have been having dental difficulties lately and spending the majority of my time trying to find a good dental clinic in my university town. Last week, I went to get a cavity filled, but the new dentist did not freeze me properly and I felt the drill! I screamed so loudly! I probably terrified the other patients. But I was quite terrified myself! I left the clinic crying and shaking and the dentist couldn’t finish the procedure because I was so scared.
I feel so angry at myself for being so lazy with flossing. I feel scared and terrified of the fillings, procedures, and perhaps maybe a root canal that I need to get done. I am full of REGRETS.
-Why did I let my tiredness take over and not brush my teeth before bed those occasional few nights?
I feel like a lot of young people do not care about their long-term health. I understand that people just want to have fun. They get completely drunk, eat fast food, laze around doing sedentary activities like video games or television, etc. Youth feels like invincibility. But if you don’t take care of yourself while you are young, you may one day be diagnosed with cancer or have a heart attack. You may need chemotherapy or a bypass surgery. And this is SCARY. And you will be full of REGRETS:
-Why didn’t I exercise more instead of watching TV every day after work/school?
-Why didn’t I eat more healthily instead of taking the easy way out and going to McDonalds?Don’t let yourself have regrets. Fortunately for my dental health, I can have fillings or surgery done and start over with a clean slate. But with cardiovascular diseases, you may not get another chance. A lifetime of physical inactivity and unhealthy foods is irreversible. Why not do something about it now?

That sucks.
I have a bunch of cavities too. =[
Before, I'd get them filled in China 'cause it was a lot cheaper, and my parents sent me back pretty often anyways. In China, they don't numb you... so you feel every bit of it. Now I'm terrified of the dentist even though they numb me for everything. =[
ugh i need to floss more often too=/
Oil of clove is a better toothache killer than anything - lasts longer too. Stay better. hugs.
I definitely should floss more often, but I do make sure I brush twice a day! Root canals aren't too bad apparently; my little brother just had one and said it was better than getting his cavities filled.
I've never been to the dentist and have never had any problems that would need me to do so. Growing up, it wasn't a big deal if I brushed my teeth at night, so I'm only recently getting into the habit of brushing my teeth twice a day. I don't floss either.
But I get your point. The choices we make now affects our future. So, I really need to focus on being healthier in general.
I definitely agree with what you have to say. I would actually take it a step further and make ridiculously unhealthy garbage like McDonalds unfit for public consumption and banned from sale. It would certianly shake things up in the US, where something 50% of the adult population is obese.
Luckily for me, I realized early on that eating nothing but junk is bad for you .. as is getting hooked on cigs and other various vices .. lol
I don't think most people will really realize this kind of thing - the idea that we're not invincible. Because the bad stuff hasn't happened to them yet. It's kind of like how "you don't know you're strength until you're tested."
I hate going to the dentist. I think you are in the Lower Mainland right? I go to a pediatric dentist, and he uses laughing gas, which is a lot easier to take than needles (I've had fillings before w/ the gas and it was actually pleasant), and when I had my wisdom teeth out it was so painless (gas & needles after I was sedated), until after i went home and the pain killers wore off..haha.
I am very religious about flossing, brushing, and avoiding certain drinks/foods for the sake of my teeth. My husband doesn't though, and he already had one root canal!!
I think the best thing you can do for your teeth is not drinking soft drinks with sugar and not eating candies that stick to your teeth. I don't need drilling when I avoid these two. I floss everyday now because I didn't know how bad your gums can turn out without it. I usually only brush after waking up or on the rare occasion when I have a soft drink, and my teeth feel icky.
My dentist has a laser drill now. It doesn't hurt and makes hardly any noise. Also, if you're not high enough when the dentist goes to drill you, let him know. I'd recommend finding a laser dentist now.
My teacher gave our class a really good tidbit of advice for life in general.
"Two things: 1] Stretch and 2] Floss. You're going to save yourself a lot of trouble."
I'm getting two drilled in a couple of weeks...
I don't think I've ever gotten a cavity before... I try to take care of my teeth, since it's one of the things people notice the most. I brush almost after every meal, if I can, and try to brush my teeth before I leave the house whenever I go out. I hate bad breath and the icky plaque feeling in my mouth! Yuck!
@Imnotcrazyjustinsane - Sounds like you have dental phobia just like me > <
@communitychannel - Thanks for the hugs! =]
@Roadlesstaken - Thx for letting me know! Root canal sounds so much scarier! Oh and it costs so much more too = = and not covered by my university's insurance policy.
@lil_squirrel4ever - I was recommended the laughing gas! does it really make u laugh?? But the new dentist that I'm trying doesn't do that. He prescribed me some oral sedatives though. So I hope that goes well. My dad is actually a dentist. He practices in Surrey. But right now, i'm in Ontario, so I can't go see him. Finding a new dentist that is reliable and trustworthy is difficult!
@Rejected_Stone - Thanks for the tip! I've never heard of laser dentistry. Gonna research it now~
@i_Nutrition - You must try the laughing gas! It doesn't make you laugh, but it does make you a little high and works much faster than a pill. They put this nose piece on and you breath in the gas. What does your dad think? I thought about switching because my dentist has very long waits, but the laughing gas is so good!
