Pedometers: 10000 Steps to Fitness
I believe pedometers are a good way to increase and keep track of your exercise and activity levels. Pedometers count steps. They usually take on the appearance of a pager as it is a small contraption that you wear on the waist of your pants. The goal is to reach 10000 steps of walking per day and what is nice is that the pedometer counts your steps while you walk to school, the washroom, and almost every other kind of daily activity.
I know some of you are going to tell me that pedometers are inaccurate and how the slightest shake will skew the results. I blame these misconceptions on those cereal boxes that gave out free CHEAP pedometers. There are actually GOOD quality pedometers out there if you take the time to look. They can now count approximately how many calories you burn, the distance that you have walked, and they are more accurate in counting your steps and less sensitive to slight movements.
With today's clothing fashion, womens' shirts are now longer and looser, making pedometers more subtle and easier to hide under one's shirt. When I wear a pedometer, the most annoying thing I find is to have immature guys ask me what it is, to snatch it from me, and ask what the reset button is. When I tell them not to press the reset button... Well... It is EXTREMELY frustrating being around people who are so fascinated by a red button that they cannot listen to SIMPLE instructions! Therefore, I prefer to hide my pedometer.
With a good quality pedometer, it is difficult to simply shake the product with your hand and produce 10000 steps. Anything ranging around US$20 is worth your money. Check out this site for pedometer recommendations.
There is also a new iPod Nano that I heard about on the radio this morning that has a built-in pedometer! It has several features that will help you rock the gym.
Even if you still believe pedometers are highly inaccurate or only have access to a pedometer that is not as good quality, a pedometer still encourages you to MOVE! And this is what is most important! Take charge of your fitness!

I've always been meaning to use one. I just keep misplacing those pedometers everywhere -_-
I had one but I dunno where it is now, might get a new one cos I walk up and down alot at work and would love to know how many I'd do in a working day.
I really want the Nike+ gear that goes with the iPod to track my information.
I use those on a daily basis - my phone has one built in lol.
It's probably off by a couple of steps, but it gives me a good idea of how many steps i'm at.
It's also good that you mentioned about walking to school and such, I was surprised when I took a look that in university I take a good 10,000 steps.
i think i want one :D
I don't understand how the foot-steps are counted from the hip or waist - are they timed?
THAT REMINDED ME OF THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM I WORKED AT, THE KIDS WERE GIVEN PEDOMETERS TO HELP THEM GET EXCITED ABOUT EXERCISING MORE AND KEEPING HEALTHY (YOU'D BE SURPRISED AT HOW THESE K-6 GRADE KIDS COMPLAIN ABOUT PE AND THEIR PE TEACHERS LACK WHAT'S THE WORLD? MOTIVATION TO MOTIVATE THESE KIDS) SOOO THEY GOT ALL EXCITED AND THEY EACH GOT ONE AND THEY ALL CHEATED ON IT! AND SOME TURNED IT INTO A COMPETITION TO SEE WHO CAN HAVE THE MOST STEPS IN ONE WEEK SOME CHEATED BY SHAKING IT! THE YOUNGER KIDS DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS FOR!
i need one :/
i'm obese.
@Rodeney123 - The pedometer counts your steps through the movement/vibration it feels from each step that you take. Some are more advanced and can measure your stride length to calculate more accurate distance results!
yeah i like the sound of the nike 1 2
I have a really great pedometer automatically built into my cell phone! It's the AT&T W580i Walkman phone. My phone was free when I started the plan, and the pedometer is great, and I tested it to make sure it didn't count any shakes or bumps. It also doesn't count when I jump. ONLY when I step, and it's encouraged me to walk more and the best thing is, I don't have to remember a pedometer because it's already in my phone in my pocket!
10000 steps a day can be unrealistic for the average college student, especially if one's job doesn't make for much walking, but what I always did was at the end of my workday I'd go for a walk and see how close I could get. Even if I was off by a couple thousand steps, I knew I'd been more active than yesterday. I think the important thing is not how many steps we take, just that we MOVE!
@prettyindecent - As long as you aim high and reach for a goal, and yes MOVE! That is already a great accomplishment for the day. Good for you, i hope that you're still using your pedometer! :)
