  • They Say Everyone Has A Cancer Story

I remember my world crashing down when I was 16 and I found out that my mother had cancer. The one person that I have known longest, who loved me unconditionally, and who pulled me through everything with support and encouragement, was faltering.

She was sick. My whole family felt helpless. I wanted to be strong for her, but seeing her so upset and worried made me weak. All I could do was cry with her. I thought the worst and couldn't imagine my life without her.

My family is lucky. My mother recovered and has been cancer-free since 2005. I know that many other people are not so fortunate though and I can't even imagine going through such a great loss.

This is why I wanted to study nutrition. I wanted to learn about preventative medicine: fueling your body with antioxidant-rich fruits & vegetables and engaging it in physical activity. Although health status is very much so related to family history and genetics, that is no excuse to not do what we can now! Preventing now is better than treating later.

They say everyone has a cancer story. Everyone has been affected detrimentally by cancer, whether it be yourself or a loved one. I am participating in the 5k Run for a Cure this Sunday. October is cancer awareness month. I am running not just for my mother, but also for myself and my own health!

    Who are you running for?
    cancer01 cancer02 cancer03
    cancer04 cancer05 cancer07
    cancer08 cancer09 cancer06

    RUN.
    Anytime is a good time.
For YOUR health. For those that love YOU. For the people that you LOVE.

Cancer is a very strange thing.
My dad passed when I was 7, and now that I'm 20 I feel that it's normal that way.
I was lucky in the way that my family still did fine financially, but it's nice to see support from random people XD

I am a cancer survivor, and if my health was better, I would most definitely do the run! Cancer runs high in my family on both sides, as well as high blood pressure and heart disease! You picked a great field to go into and I'm really glad that your mom pulled through!

I was just thinking/blogging about my grandpa who died from bone and lung cancer. I very much like your reasoning for your interest in nutrition. For some types of cancers and other diseases, there really is a lot we can do to lower our risk for it.

I'm glad to hear your mom recovered. Have fun at the 5K!

Hmm, I'm thinking about participating this month. Only because I have nothing else to do, and I think it'll make me feel better about helping others. xP

Good luck at the race and congrats to your mum. :]

Wow, I'm glad that your mother has recovered and that she is alive and well now... And bravo to you for taking action and running for a great cause... I have two aunts who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. One of them has recovered. The other is still going through treatment and is now checking to see if she has another cancer in her body now, uterine cancer... ... So I can relate on a similar level with you.. Great post.

WOW. i never thought of it that way, i mean eating right and staying healthy or running in memory of someone or for people that love you. my mom died of cancer when i was 18, after battling it for four years. hers was from smoking though, so i guess i never thought of it in terms of overall healthiness, but i am anti-cigarettes for sure.
i'm so glad your mother is alright, and you are dedicating your career to health.
you just made me wish that i was running in honor of my mother. maybe someday.

Awesome that you're running!! Awesome too that your mom recovered!

I don't think there is a run over here, gotta look it up. I lost a lot of women on my mom's side of the family to cancer.. Her youngest sister, her mother, her grandmother, her cousins. And they all passed away before they turned fifty, so my mom was very very relieved the day after she turned fifty. I would run for them.. And myself ofcourse, I'm only 25, I would run that with this year I will not have lived half of my life so far.

I'm happy for you to be running for your mom and yourself. I have a similar story, I found out my mom had cancer during the holidays in 2007 but has since then recovered. It's such a heartbreaking thing, but like you said, everybody has a cancer story. It is great that you found out what you wanted to do with your life from the situation.

I am so glad your mom has recovered and I am so happy for your family! Bless you.

Running is easy and it is a lot of fun. All you need are your sneakers, a bottle of water, and your friends.

Speaking of which, I should get back to running...
