Reflecting on 2009 and Improving 2010
I really believe in overall wellness, not just nutrition. I have been criticized by some people in my program about how my blog is too broad or as they claim "does not have a specific audience". But nutrition is not the only part of your health and well-being. There is also emotional health, fitness, self-esteem, social life, career, and so on. These are all things that contribute to your happiness. I try to touch on all kinds of topics to improve the overall well-being of individuals!
A wellness wheel is a common exercise that can help you reflect on your life and overall well-being. If you just type "wellness wheel" into Google, you'll find many different types! I created my own one and put it on top of an orange to put a little nutrition kick to it. A wellness wheel can be very personal and have many different aspects. I put a larger focus on health and social life.
Take a look at 2009 and reflect on each aspect of the circle. Identify how "full" your circle or orange is. If you are completely satisfied in that category, then that slice of the orange will be full. If you are completely unsatisfied, then that slice will be empty or gone. This signifies that this is a category you may want to work on in 2010!
Of course, everyone has different priorities and values, so you may have different categories on your wellness wheel. Other people may consider having other categories for spirtuality, intelligence, mental health, or emotional health for example. Look at your wheel and ask yourself:
- Is it full? Is it circular and even throughout each category?
- Why did you rate each category so?
- What can you do to improve the categories that were rated low?
For me, there are a few categories I really want to work on in 2010! I want to head to the gym more, learn to cook new meals and become amazing in the kitchen, and work hard on my school and applications. My relationship & family categories are a bit more personal. But you get the idea!
What do you want to improve on in 2010? I hope that your 2010 will be bright, juicy, and full of vitamin C! Happy new year everybody!

Good post-I believe in some of the same things as well to promote wellness :) It goes beyond the body taking care of yourself, but mind and soul as well :)
I need to learn to cook better, and work out more too!! =)
I'm going to study more about fitness (maybe even get certified again to make money on the side), and make fitness a significant priority in my life. To conclude this year, I will run the California International Marathon. I am also changing my eating behavior by eating much, much slower (I normally devour things like a pack of wolves!), which in turn causes me to eat less at each sitting. Therefore, my eating lifestyle is changing, and it is improving my caloric in-take. Along with all the exercising I am doing, I should get down to my marathon weight in no time (3-6 months giving me 6 months to train for the marathon with a solid foundation). I would also like to spend more time in the environment, outdoors and exerting myself, whether it be rock climbing, hiking or camping. To facilitate all this, I also need money and thus need a better job. Don't know where I will get one, but here's to hoping.
@lil_squirrel4ever - hey! r we still meeting up for a great Xanga Vancity meet-up? :)
Great blog. I'm currently saving that orange picture. I'm renaming it "The Orange of Life" ;)
@bryangoodrich - Oh my god! a marathon!! you're amazing!!!!! good luck with that :)
@i_Nutrition - thanks, but I have already done one before (2002). Surviving it will not be good enough. This time, I want to do well! I have all year so there is no excuse why I cannot kick ass. The real challenge would be if I could do it in 3:30 (8 min pace for the whole time!)
Another great post - mind, body, spirit - internal and external. Setting priorities and realistic goals then sticking to them is what keeps life interesting. A well balanced life makes that easier.
After 30 plus years of personal abuse I've survived and I'm doing a half marathon this summer.Even though I'm an old gipper -blogs and posts like yours give me inspiration to keep going. So please - you keep going also. Thanks.
