  • Grape + Apple = Grapple

grapple I saw this product on TV a couple of months ago and I got really excited when I saw it at the grocery store last weekend. I love to try new foods. Grapple is advertised as "Looks like an apple... Tastes like a grape!" It is not a GMO (genetically modified organism). These apples are infused with grape flavor by being soaked in a bath of concentrated grape juice. They do not take any additional calories. Like any other medium-sized apple, Grapple has about 80 calories per whole piece and 5 grams of fiber goodness.

But that's about it. I tried this product out, but was very disappointed! The skin of the apple had a sweet grape scent, kind of like a smelly felt marker. But after I bit into it, it was nothing but a plain apple to me! The grape infused flavors were not strong enough at all to take over the apple's own flavors. Taste has everything to do with scent, which is why you can't taste things as well when your nose is stuffed up from a cold. Try eating while plugging your nose with your fingers - you won't taste anything!

You can watch a video on how these apples are made here on the product's website. The website emphasizes that kids would absolutely love this "exceptional fruit treat". Is it just a novelty? I really don't think kids would know or see the difference if you gave them one Grapple and one regular apple. But the novelty of this product pulled me to make the expensive purchase of four Grapples for $4.99CDN.

My personal favorite apple varieties are gala apples and fuji apples. Check out my post on ipod apples. Would novelties like Grapple encourage you to eat more fruits and vegetables? I wonder if one day we'll get funky and nutty fusion foods like this:

    Freakonomics!
