  • Make Your Own Portion-Sized Frozen Yogurt

I used to do this in high school, but completely forgot about this trick until I wrote up my last post which featured high-calcium cheeses and yogurts. This trick is not for everyone though! However, I like it! My mother used to place individual yogurt cups into the freezer. Voila! Frozen yogurt!

Why this trick is not for everybody:

    • The yogurt becomes rock-hard. You can throw it and probably break a window! Let it defrost for at least 1 hour at room temperature. I like to take one yogurt cup out of the freezer before I start making dinner so that I can have it for dessert.
    • The texture does not become smooth or creamy like real ice cream or frozen yogurt. It has kind of a flaky/icy texture. However, I love the way it melts in my mouth like ice cream would. This is awesome for hot days in the summer!

    Why I like this trick:

    • Each cup is individually portion-sized. Easy and convenient.
    • I bought Yoplait Source yogurt cups (picture above) and each cup is only 35 calories.
    • Although sometimes it feels like I'm ice-picking while jabbing the rock-hard yogurt with my spoon (sometimes I'm too impatient to wait an hour), I find this a much better alternative than mindlessly snacking in front of the TV. If too frozen, it takes me a long time to get through even one cup. This prevents me from overeating.

Give it a try! Stick a couple of yogurt cups in the freezer and let me know what you think!
