Chocolate Sushi: A Perfect Portion-Sized Dessert
I went to my friend's fine dining restaurant this week. She's taking a course where they learn to make the food, manage a restaurant, pairing wine with food, etc. It's a really great deal to go to student-run fine dining restaurants because you can get a 6-course meal for a discounted price. The professor charges $34 CDN only! The presentation of the food is so nice, but very small portion-sizes in comparison to normal restaurants!
My favorite dish of the night by far was the dessert. I have a big sweet tooth. My friend and her group created "chocolate sushi topped with passion fruit caviar". It was served with chopsticks too!
It's really just a small piece of cheesecake inside which looks like white sushi rice. The seaweed is actually a thin layer of chocolate and what looks like salmon roe at the top is just a fruity jelly.
I thought it was delicious. I love cheesecake! But in comparison to getting a huge piece of cheesecake at Swiss Chalet, this chocolate sushi was really tiny! After my friend's boyfriend finished his chocolate sushi, he said that all he feels like now is to go to the grocery store and buy a whole cheesecake! He felt like the portion size was so small that it left him just wanting more.
I think small portion-sizes are perfect though. We are so used to seeing huge restaurant portion-sizes. We have forgotten what is an adequate and healthy amount to eat. This has lead to larger waists and obesity-rates. This small sushi-size cheesecake was just enough for me. I didn't feel sick after like I normally would with over-indulgence. It is great to enjoy so called "forbidden foods" in moderation. A couple of bites every once in a while can help you stay on track with your healthy diet. Diets that are too restrictive just cause cravings and can lead to binge eating (aka: you + the fridge = best friends).
Do you think you'd be satisfied with just a couple of bites of dessert? Or would it lead you to just want more? I will be starting a "What I Eat" series of posts to show you guys some healthy foods that I love. I am by no means a great cook. I definitely don't cook a huge variety of foods either! I will probably be starting with breakfast foods because that is the most simple. Eating breakfast is so important too! Stay tuned.

mm... I want some chocolate sushi now... can't wait for your series of good healthy eats! I sure need it :)
@hodtos - Starting with small steps is the way to go :) waking up in the morning and just eating something, anything, even if it's small, will help to jump start your metabolism and start your day the right way!
I will definitely try eating at least something for breakfast. I never eat breakfast so I guess that contributes to me feeling tired a lot of the time..
love 3 course meals. I never have room for dessert =) I wish more restaurants had 3 course meals with mini servings (with lower prices to match).
it's so cute!!
That looks really cute, but it's just enough to make me mad. I could probably bump up the portion to two of those without over-indulging. Just one would probably make me want to go to the store and buy a large cheesecake.
Love it. I'll take 6!
I think that small deserts would be perfect! Sometimes all I want is a bite but when the whole cake is sitting in front of me I eat more...which leads to the inevidable guilt. Mimi's Cafe has some small deserts which are pretty perfect and so does PF Changs. I think more resturaunts should go in this direction.
May I ask what the other two things are sitting beside the chocolate sushi?
@StarryEyedDreamer41 - It's a small scoop of green tea white chocolate ice cream and in the small cup is a cappuccino. I know, the ice cream is kind of served funny! Today I was sitting in Starbucks and one of the staff offered me a free grande caramel frap. I hesitated! I mean they're so yummy! But I said no thanks in the end because I knew I would feel sick if I finished it all. It's like a liquid cake! I've never heard of Mimi's Cafe or PF Changs. They must be smaller restaurants and not big chained stores?
@i_Nutrition - Yeah, I always get the Light Caramel Frap. For I think...120 calories, it satisfys any coffee-shop craving I may have on the way home from class. I'm not suprised that you haven't heard of Mimi's...it's a lot smaller of a chain than PF changs. I think Mimi's is mostly in the southern states. PF Changs however...without it, there would be no happiness. It is the most amazing higher-priced chinese resturaunt EVA! Mapquest the closest location, drop everything, and go. You'll gain a few pounds just by looking at the place but it is so very worth it.
@StarryEyedDreamer41 - haha I'm Canadian. That's probably why I haven't heard of either. I will look into it when I'm in the states next! Which is rare! But it happens every other year :)
Oh! Ha, sorry I didn't realize. How very ethnocentric of me.
@StarryEyedDreamer41 - nah not a big deal! There are a lot of Xanga users from United States here!
Sounds delicious - I think people who eat healthy more often will find it easier to be satisfied by a small dessert, mostly because consuming a lot of fat and sugar will make them more sick than someone who is used to eating that stuff.
