  • Chocolate Sushi: A Perfect Portion-Sized Dessert

I went to my friend's fine dining restaurant this week. She's taking a course where they learn to make the food, manage a restaurant, pairing wine with food, etc. It's a really great deal to go to student-run fine dining restaurants because you can get a 6-course meal for a discounted price. The professor charges $34 CDN only! The presentation of the food is so nice, but very small portion-sizes in comparison to normal restaurants!

My favorite dish of the night by far was the dessert. I have a big sweet tooth. My friend and her group created "chocolate sushi topped with passion fruit caviar". It was served with chopsticks too!

It's really just a small piece of cheesecake inside which looks like white sushi rice. The seaweed is actually a thin layer of chocolate and what looks like salmon roe at the top is just a fruity jelly.

I thought it was delicious. I love cheesecake! But in comparison to getting a huge piece of cheesecake at Swiss Chalet, this chocolate sushi was really tiny! After my friend's boyfriend finished his chocolate sushi, he said that all he feels like now is to go to the grocery store and buy a whole cheesecake! He felt like the portion size was so small that it left him just wanting more.

I think small portion-sizes are perfect though. We are so used to seeing huge restaurant portion-sizes. We have forgotten what is an adequate and healthy amount to eat. This has lead to larger waists and obesity-rates. This small sushi-size cheesecake was just enough for me. I didn't feel sick after like I normally would with over-indulgence. It is great to enjoy so called "forbidden foods" in moderation. A couple of bites every once in a while can help you stay on track with your healthy diet. Diets that are too restrictive just cause cravings and can lead to binge eating (aka: you + the fridge = best friends).

Do you think you'd be satisfied with just a couple of bites of dessert? Or would it lead you to just want more? I will be starting a "What I Eat" series of posts to show you guys some healthy foods that I love. I am by no means a great cook. I definitely don't cook a huge variety of foods either! I will probably be starting with breakfast foods because that is the most simple. Eating breakfast is so important too! Stay tuned.
