Punta Cana Grad Trip (Pics)
The last month has been busy with final exams, moving, work, etc. I am officially done my undergraduate degree! Hooray! I went on a 7-day grad trip with a few of my classmates to a resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic afterwards. We felt like we deserved a break!
I am in the striped swimsuit (second from the left). This is actually the first time I've had my picture taken in a bikini. I have gone on beach trips with friends before to Hawaii and Hainan island, but I remember I never allowed anybody to take a picture of me in a bikini. Even if it was a group shot, I would put on a t-shirt and cover-up at almost all times. It may not seem interesting to anyone else, but to me, I am amazed at how much my self-confidence has improved over the years and how I really should not have been so harsh on myself when I was a teenager.
We are responsible for our own happiness. We cannot change others' behaviors. It's absolutely exhausting trying! But we can change the way we perceive things, our attitudes, and our focus on life. I used to worry about my body-image and what others thought of me, but this is just a never-ending cycle of self-loathing and hatred. Now, my focus is on my family, friends, and my career. These are the things that are important to me, and when I give my time and focus to them, they in turn also make me feel happy and better about myself.
My friends and I went on a 1-day excursion tour of the city, mountains, and museums. I'm really glad we got out of the resort and saw more of the life and culture in the Dominican Republic. We saw exotic fruit trees, made cocoa and fresh hot chocolate, and went to the sugar cane fields.
My friend in one of the above pictures is drinking from a coconut. Coconut water is huge right now as a replenishing sports drink that's way better for you than Gatorade. It's very low-calorie and has tons of electrolytes to replenish your body after a huge sweat! My hot yoga studio was selling coconut water in juice boxes for $2.50 each. So pricey!
It looks more like a cheese string, not sugar cane!
We also visited an elementary school, which was just a one-room building. They were having a snack, which was a muffin and a carton of milk. Being the nutrition student that I am, I even took pictures of their milk! It seems to be a very high-calorie, high-fat, high-nutrient milk. I guess it's most important to get as much nutrients and energy as possible into these kids. Obesity is not as big of a problem there as it is in North America!
Fruits + Veggies!!! + 4 Nutrition Students = Love
We couldn't help it.I am going on to do my dietetic internship at Hamilton Health Sciences Corp, while these three friends are going to start a Master's with an integrated-internship program in September. One of them also has a food blog! Her name is Amanda Li (http://dessertsalamoderation.blogspot.com/). She doesn't update very much, but can definitely check her out.
Now, I'm back in Vancouver with my family and enjoying it very much! I'm still working for my nutrition professor and her graduate student in an obesity-management literature review. Looking forward to summer!

Congratulations on graduating! Also, I'm glad to hear that you have a healthy self-esteem. You look very pretty in your beach attire and I mean that in the cleanest, least lewd way possible.

@misobored - I'm happy to be done undergrad! No more poor student days and high tuition fees! Although I bet I will miss it some day in the future. All my older friends say they wish they were back to being a student again. People always want what they can't have I think.

wow, the beach looks amazing.
and congratulations!
what are your post graduation plans?
@bluehoursky - Thanks! I'm starting a dietetic internship in a hospital in the Fall. It's a 1-year program, and once I complete/pass it, then I can write the national exam to become a Registered Dietitian! Exciting! I'm not 100% sure about plans after that. We shall see! I'll definitely be learning more in my internship and getting a taste of all fields of dietetics. I definitely like writing/blogging and social media though! We'll see how things go.
@i_Nutrition - That's so cool! Are you going to have the chance to go through rotations? I know medical students and pharmacology students go through rotations, so they can experience many aspects of their field. Do you think you'll be able to work with someone who owns their own business or something? I think that'd be pretty cool. Good luck.
Watch out for the botflies laying their larva on you
@bluehoursky - Yea definitely, the internship will be all rotations changing up every week. The four main topics are clinical, community, food service, and research. Within clinical, there are rotations within oncology, nephrology, etc. I unfortunately don't know much about the program yet! lol, but I heard that I get to choose/request my rotations this summer. I have heard of a business component, but I don't think everybody does it. There are elective components where I heard that I have to call dietitians and find my own placements. Yea, I heard pharmacy and medical students go through a similar hands-on experience internship. And the biggest similarity? Completely UNPAID...! LOL
@DJHong15 - Wow, I never heard that one! But I think I'm okay now. Back safe in Canada ;) Still lots of mosquitoes!
@i_Nutrition - Oh that sucks that you don't get paid! =[ But it sounds like a lot of fun. =D
The water in that first pic looks awesome.

Those are some good words of wisdom - which are so true, thanks for sharing
@VinceChu - I learned some of these principles from a book called "Choice Theory" by William Glasser. Should check that out if you're interested! :)
@i_Nutrition - thanks, i just amazoned (lol probably not a word) it, and read the description, it sounds really interesting - but unfortunately I'm in the middle of my uni exams so I won't have time to read it for a week or two
