  • Healthy Foods to Cool Down in Summer

Dear Freezer, I love you. I especially love to stick my head in you while I suffer without air conditioning in the student residences of Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières! My freezer is everything that is keeping me sane this summer!

Last week, our residence rooms were about 40 degrees celcius inside. I was eating a freezie to cool down, but found it was pretty sugary. And once I finished eating it, I would get hot again and need another! At 100 calories per freezie pop, I'd probably be looking at a fast-track to diabetes since it's all straight sugar. It's like downing can after can of coke!

I started sucking constantly on ice cubes instead because they are calorie-free and keep me cool. You can also try placing fruit juices in your ice cube tray. Make sure your juice has lots of vitamin C!

My roommates and I unpeeled some bananas, stuck toothpics in them, dipped them in melted hershey's chocolate, and then stuck them in the freezer. They look kind of funny because there were almond chunks but it was soooooo goooooood -- and its great even without chocolate too! Way to get your fruit servings in!

I've been munching on frozen grapes and berries too. Grapes are easier to freeze because you can just put the whole bag in with the stems and they freeze separately. Blueberries need to be separated first. I wrote a how-to-post here:

Frozen fruit skewers are a great idea too! Be creative!

I went to the bar this week with my roommates thinking that there would be wonderful air conditioning there, but nope! We bought cold drinks and immediately placed them against our necks and faces. The coldness didn't last long!
