  • I don't think grocery stores like me...

I've been working on my second Youtube video, but there have been minor drawbacks. I originally wanted to film in a grocery store, but when I asked the store manager at my local grocery store, he said "No."

Not "no, sorry I can't help you!"
But just a plain blunt "NO."

I can understand that he probably has no power over the decision as I did go to a grocery store with a large corporation name. But the rejection was so blunt! It was as if the manager was scared that I'd plant cockroaches in his store, film it, then send it to the local news as some sinister revenge.

But I'm trying to do something good by encouraging others to live healthier lives! It was quite disappointing because I had a lot of video ideas that are shot down now because I don't think I can get permission from store managers to film. I would have loved to do a grocery store tour on video. A lot of stores have dietitian-led grocery store tours. Definitely check and see if your local store supplies this kind of service!

Anyway, I asked a friend to help me in the skit for my next video! Actually, he is the star. I play a minor role. It took us more than four hours to film last weekend and the video only ended up being a bit more than one minute!

Here's a small preview of what I'm editing:

If you're trying to get your husband or boyfriend to eat more fruits and vegetables, then this video might help! I will be uploading either tonight or tomorrow.

As an alternative, you could take pictures of the shelves and dub audio over them as needed (just don't yell to the wal-mart manager that you're taking photos of their store. . .). Or.. find pictures of the items... on the internet?

    Back-up plans! Back-up plans! ...

If you were feeling gutsy, you could try to green-screen (technically: "Chroma Key") yourself in front of the images and point to various objects within.

    Ugh.. the.. last video project I was involved in... still isn't finished. Told the guy coordinating it that I could help shoot, but that I probably wouldn't be able to do most of the editing (that meaning, he would have to)--and, 6months+ after the fact. . . . the 4-hours worth of recording sits only partially edited. -_-;

Lmk if you need any ideas on how to get around any other obstacles? -- and hopefully this maybe helped.

    Ooo can't wait to see.

@theacematt2 - I once took photos of some products at an asian store and a worker saw me and made me delete all the photos that I took on my camera.

  • theacematt2

    @osmundaregalis - T_T I snap random photos of things at work... all the time? Was it a smaller store or a larger chain-based thing? I'd opt for a semi-crowded Saturday/Sunday at Wal-Mart. . .

or... the product pics from internet, if possible. Amazon.com actually should have a nice selection of items.

@theacematt2 - haha thx for the tips! back up plans are always good. I had to re-write the script to have it just in my own home. It was less embarrassing to film anyway!
I'm considering to get an iPhone or another phone with good video capture... then maybe I can be sneaky and film quickly... but it looks like i might be texting or reading something on my phone! it'd be a really sloppy video tho.

@osmundaregalis - haha i wonder if u could hv just "said" they were deleted, then run away. but i think I would hv been a little bit terrified/nervous if I were in your position. Nobody likes getting in trouble!

  • JacquieCooks

@theacematt2 - Well... it's something in between a small and large chain-based store.  I guess I wasn't being sneaky enough about it.

  • JacquieCooks

@theHealthRabbit - They actually stood there and waited/watched me until I had it all deleted.

  • theacematt2

@theHealthRabbit - just had another thought. Rather than talking over a displayed image.... if you decided to do it all in-home, you could extend an arm to where an object -would- be, and then edit it in afterward with a pic from the web that appears in the implied spot. (i hope that makes sense??)

ie: "If you're looking for a drink, don't head to the Pop/Soda aisle, instead try some ____ Orange Juice" ::make motion toward counter/air space of where picture of juice container might fit on-screen::

..eh, sounded good in my head, at least.

  • theacematt2

@osmundaregalis - See! it's about finding the misspelled tags, snapping the photos, and running away as if nothing happened!

    I mean...

    uh...

    I never did that...

    . . . .habitually. . . .

It's a brilliant idea! And you could have gotten them publicity! Plan to try elsewhere? Or write to corporate?

  • Shinbi_Belldandy

I hate when stores act stupid. They probably thought you were an undercover journalist. LOL. Look for an independently owned grocery store. They'll probably be more receptive. Or like the first commenter said, use pictures!

  • MzKeekz

You know, you can secretly tape it during your trip to the grocery.  A lot of gurus do that.

  • ionekoa

@theacematt2 - film with the camera hidden, then greenscreen yourself over the previously filmed video at home. that was my thought, very similar to what you were saying.

  • kachino

That video was hilarious! Wow, you do have skills! :)

    Dear Rabbit,

Why not try WHOLE FOODS or TRADER JOE'S, as they both promote organic products and healthy alternatives. Just go direct to corporate hdqtrs. and ask as high up as you can. Usually store managers have little discretion on letting you do what you want to do. Just don't quit, your idea is brilliant!

I agree with the idea above about using healthier grocery stores. I don't think grocery stores, in general, care about good food choices since they make so much money on junky packaged food anyways. And corporations have a lot more rules about filming at their stores, so managers will most likely not let you film, so they don't get into trouble later. Maybe try a little family grocery store instead and ask the owner?
